The Associate Director of Career Education and Advising serves as a key conduit of information and education regarding full-time positions, internships, and experiential opportunities in a student services environment. This roles pro-actively engages with students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and friends of Hampden-Sydney College to develop and promote a host of career building opportunities and skills for undergraduate liberal arts students.
The Associate Director will accomplish this through direct career advising with undergraduate students in individual and group settings, conduct outreach programming, manage office technology resources, and serve as a knowledgeable resource for students exploring post-graduation options including Graduate School and Fellowship Programs.
Reports to the Director of the Ferguson Career Center. Must have ability to work occasional evening hours and weekend special events.
Career Education and Counseling: Provide one-on-one counseling to students and alumni on topics representing the full job search process including career strategy, application development, professional networking, and interviewing and salary negotiation. Supports students applying to Graduate School and Fellowships by proactively researching student options, communicating testing dates, and reviewing personal statements/applications. Performs career workshops for groups including clubs, fraternities, and specialized academic groups.
Graduate School Advising: Identify and cultivate promising students and plan events to raise awareness of graduate programs and test dates, with students and faculty. Facilitate the application process; work with students and alumni on their applications in coordination with the faculty advisor; and track progress.
Employer and Alumni Relations: While partnering with Alumni Relations, build strong relationships with employers and alumni in a variety of industries and functions to serve as resources for students. Identify and promote full-time opportunities and internships provided by alumni, Handshake and other methods of advertising. Strategically and systematically prospect and develop entry level opportunities by industry and function through local, regional and national alumni and professional networks. Maintain records of known first destination positions and internships in order to provide clear reporting and to build long lasting relationships with alumni and employers.
Technology: Must have familiarity with Handshake, career outcome collection and data. Data management and analysis skills, keeping current on all web based content for programs and student training are essential to the position.
Other: Supervise student workers in the office while providing productive projects to support the office mission. Promote effective and efficient student centered service, as well as other job related activities and duties as requested by the Director of Career Education and Advising. Represent the Director when needed and perform other duties as assigned

Graduate Degree (MA or MS), and at least 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with case interviewing and career counseling skills; effective public speaking and written communication skills; and the ability to establish rapport with students, parents, faculty, alumni, employers and staff in a strong liberal arts environment.
