Student Success is at the core of VCU's new strategic plan – Quest 2025: Together We Transform. To ensure each VCU student finds success on their individualized path, it is imperative that we establish a campus environment that eliminates artificial barriers to degree progression/graduation, nurtures student engagement both with faculty and our community, develops cultural competency in our graduates, and creates opportunities to experiment and develop tangible and intangible skills related to their future career goals.
The Director of VCU Career Services supervises a team of 13 full-time professionals and numerous part-time/graduate staff to provide individualized career related services to VCU's two campuses – serving undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional students (Health). The Director works collaboratively with counterparts across campus (Career Services in the College of Engineering and College of Business) to ensure economy of scale for career platforms and to also maximize employer relationships. The Director will also work in conjunction with the Associate Vice Provost for Transfer Initiatives to develop successful career transfer pathways with the Virginia Community College System schools.
The main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
LEADERSHIP & SUPERVISION
Sets overall goals and priorities for career and professional development on campus, in concert with the Senior Associate Vice Provost.
Lead and set the vision for the management of office operations and in representing career services to the campus community.
Use understanding of career development theories in design and delivery of career education. Provide curricular oversight for first year, transfer, and continuing student career courses.
Serves as co-owner of the VCU Major Maps project in collaboration with the Director of Strategic Initiatives. Serve on university committees related to the development, institutionalization, and on-going assessment/effectiveness of these maps.
Awareness of trends both nationally and regionally in higher education, career services, employment marketplace and economy and the resulting impact on VCU's unique populations of students, academic programs, and alumni
Conduct office-wide process for annual appraisals, recognition and team-building of staff. Encourage staff development and growth. Showcase successful staff effort at the campus, local, regional, and national levels.
Determine allocation of department operating budget for office and manage budget in excess of $900,000 (staffing and operating budget). Annually forecast, in partnership with senior leadership, budget requests for future/anticipated growth
Participates in University development efforts to raise funds for critical career experiential opportunities including presentations to potential donors and grant writing for foundation support.
Regularly evaluate office policies (staffing, employer, students, etc.) in accordance with professional association standards (NACE) and University standards; communicate to stakeholders as needed.
Ensure all university rules, policies, regulations, and internal customer service expectations are followed.
RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT & STAKEHOLDER COMMUNICATIONS
Serve as a senior leader on the Student Success Administrative Team.
Develop and maintain stakeholder relationships and work actively to promote career services and career and professional development as a component of the academic mission of VCU.
Co-coordinate the VCU Career Council in conjunction with the Senior Associate Vice Provost to facilitate the discussion of common issues, resources, and solutions used to manage career-related services for undergraduate and graduate/professional students, alumni, and the community.
Develop understanding of the unique needs within the various schools and units at VCU; contribute to the development of programs and resources relevant to those needs and congruent with workforce needs in the City of Richmond, in the Commonwealth and region.
Collaborate with Virginia Community College System schools to successfully transition transfer students into parallel career development levels as indigenous VCU students.
Maintain relationships with employers, alumni and families as needed to steward externship, internship, full-time hiring and programming opportunities in collaboration with employer and experiential development staff.
Participate in outreach efforts to active employers, alumni, donors, and community stakeholders.
Participate in various local, state, regional and national organizations to increase presence of VCU Career Services and our role in workforce development and career education of students and alumni.
STRATEGIC PLANNING & ASSESSMENT
Set the annual & multi-year strategic vision for the office. Lead staff in developing and implementing shared strategic priorities; monitor and report progress toward strategic goals and objectives.
Ensure that stakeholder needs are met through strategic initiatives of office and to ensure that students have access to relevant and timely career services.
Utilize assessment information to modify programs and services.
Collaborate with the Office of Planning & Decision Support to yield strong response rates on annual career outcomes reporting.
Regularly measure outcomes of student career preparation programs and services and report results to stakeholders.
Identify potential revenue streams for office that will allow for additional operating budget and increased independence from University budgeting process.
Stay current on changing economic and labor conditions and industry trends in commonwealth, region, and nationally.
