Soka University of America (SUA) is seeking a full-time Director of Career Development & Internships. The Director is responsible for the leadership and the strategic direction of Career Development & Internships. The Director serves as the primary liaison between the university, its students and alumni, and potential employers on a state, regional, and national scale. This position participates and is visible in the University community, supporting the activities and achievements of students in relation to their career development. This position is under the supervision of the Dean of Students.
Necessary duties include but are not limited to:
Develops strategic vision for Career development & Internships and effectively communicates it University-wide.
Develops short and long range operating plans and policy, which includes budgets, career development programs and services, and employer relations.
Builds and maintains relationships with established employers and implements outreach efforts to new employers to develop internship and employment opportunities for students and alumni.
Plans and executes programs and develops resources that improve career readiness and address the unique needs to students in particular programs and fields.
Develops tools and strategies to effectively market Soka students and alumni to employers.
Leads change to remain responsive to student career development needs and evolving market trends.
Consults with colleagues to ensure programs and services address student needs and incorporates faculty involvement in identifying opportunities to bridge skills development.
Trains staff and institutes processes to ensure consistency; leads and mentors a team of career professionals as one progressive and cohesive team within the organization.
Coordinates communication before and during internship experiences to ensure successful outcomes; and coordinates assessment of experiences.
Provides organizational responsibility for program planning and evaluation of career services and internships.
Provides career counseling to students.
Ensures timely and accurate data collection, analysis and reporting for both departmental assessment and student outcomes, overseeing relevant assessment measures to ensure continuous improvement.
Participates in weekend and evening work hours as needed.
Qualifications & Skills
A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in career development and/or employment counseling or the equivalent.
Experience in program development, supervision and evaluation, budgeting, and computerization.
Experience in a university career center or corporate experience in the college recruitment function preferred.
Demonstrated experience with MS Office systems including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and relational databases.
Effective leadership and organizational management skills.
Ability to create an inspiring team environment with an open communication culture.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to author and create proposals and reports, including database and statistical reports, as well as data analysis.
Knowledge of management principles and budgeting practices.
Knowledge of job search strategies, job market trends, employer relations, contemporary recruitment practices, and/or trends in career services, recruitment or workforce development.
Ability to interact with diverse student and staff populations and demonstrated experience in the use of cross-cultural counseling skills.
High ethical and professional standards.
Master’s degree required, preferably in higher education, educational administration, counseling, student personnel services, or a related field.
