The Assistant Director of Employer Relations with the Engineering Master’s Programs in Duke's Pratt School of Engineering serves students in the Master of Engineering Management, Master of Engineering, and Master of Science in Engineering programs. The Assistant Director works with two other Assistant Directors and an Associate Director to provide high level support to these students as they explore careers and pursue jobs and internships. This role focuses on the development of employer partners in generating full-time and experiential learning opportunities for students.
This position works closely, and is housed in, the Duke Career Center, and assists with OneDuke career programs, fairs, strategic initiatives, and special projects. This role also works with the Director of Corporate and Industry Relations within the School of Engineering on initiatives and Pratt events, such as, Tech Connect and Startup Connect.
Contribute to the Duke School of Engineering and Duke Career Center through representation on department and school committees (i.e. Employer Relations Team, Diversity & Inclusion Committee, NC Talent Strategy & Outreach Committee, etc.)
Engage in strategic planning and brainstorming for Engineering Master’s Team to establish priorities and reach goals. Contribute to the strategic planning and brainstorming of the Duke Career Center Employer Relations Team to reach shared goals.
Generate and maintain relationships with Pratt School of Engineering faculty and staff as well as other stakeholders on campus.
Employer Strategy and Outreach (35%)
Develop and implement a strategic plan to increase engagement of new employers aligned with the goals of the Pratt School of Engineering as well as the competencies and interests of Engineering Master’s students.
Cultivate relationships established with new employer partners through strategic outreach, leading to the generation of jobs and internship opportunities for Engineering Master’s students.
Enhance relationships with existing employer partners through the development and implementation of effective strategies for recruiting Duke students, specifically Engineering Master’s students.
Communications and Marketing (20%)
Develop a communications plan for interacting with established and new employers to stay abreast of hiring trends as well as outcomes of interactions. Include plans for informing employers of new School of Engineering programs, data related to student outcomes, and opportunities for engagement with Duke University, specifically the Engineering Master’s population.
Communicate with employers to understand value-add in hiring Engineering Master’s students and utilize information in the development of collateral.
Collaborate with Engineering Master’s Career Services Team, Pratt School of Engineering Administration, and Departments to develop marketing collateral for use in engaging with employers.
Leverage resources (e.g. newsletters, social media, etc.) to broadly communicate all activities to supported students with real-time, relevant information.
Program and Event Management (15%)
Provide guidance and manage requests by employers for information sessions, office hours, on-campus interviews, tech talks, job or internship postings, and other engagement opportunities requested. Partner with campus colleagues where appropriate.
Lead Engineering Master’s Career Services team initiatives to explore collaboration with employers for active learning opportunities for students. Examples include treks, case or technical competitions, tech talks etc.
Assist with Career Center and Pratt School of Engineering events, such as the annual Career Fairs and TechConnect.
Data Analysis and Assessment (15%)
Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations for program activities; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Collect information about Engineering Masters students as they become alumni to facilitate future interaction with the program.
Monitor student employment outcomes (internship & full-time) for Engineering Master’s programs to determine employment statistics and inform discussions with students.
Investigate trends, and recommend and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness based on the data. Specifically develop and maintain expertise about the global/us marketplace for international students.
Conduct annual reviews to understand the landscape of hiring including the changing needs of employers relevant to Engineering Master’s students for informing team’s work.
Relationship Management (10%)
Develop and sustain relationships across campus including colleagues in each of the professional schools, faculty, staff, and student groups.
Collaborate with Pratt School of Engineering Industry Relations and Duke Career Center Employer Relations teams
Counseling & Advising (5%)
Provide counseling, coaching and advising as needed on career choices and the job search process in individual or group settings. Assist students in understanding a competency based search approach and the incorporation of the employer’s perspective.
Create a safe environment based on confidentially, trust, and follow-through in which students may share their experiences and express doubts and frustrations.
Competitive candidates will have a Master’s degree and at least one year of relevant experience in a university or graduate / professional school career services office or industry environment focused on HR, sales, and/or marketing.
Candidates should be adept at developing strategy, building relationships, facilitating connections, managing data, and communicating value to diverse stakeholders in a variety of settings.
