Southern Methodist University (SMU), a nationally ranked private university located near the heart of Dallas, seeks a Career Coach (Associate Director 1) to provide career development subject matter expertise for BBA (Finance, Financial Consulting, Real Estate) and Masters of Science (MS) student populations interested in consulting and investment banking (IB) at the Career Management Center at Cox School of Business.

The Career Coach meets with students and alumni to assess and affect career readiness through coaching, advising and training for effective participation in job search activities, including interviews, site visits, networking events, job fairs, corporate information sessions and other off and on-campus recruitment activities. Administer and interpret career related assessment tools. Teach career decision making methods and assist students in applying basic principles of effective career decision-making. This position will plan and implement targeted career development events, and serve as a resource to industry/ functional area staff in the career center. Also collaborate, as needed, to identify and cultivate relationships with local, regional and national organizations that have potential to hire Cox students for internship and full-time employment opportunities.
Individual Career Coaching & Training: Prepare primarily BBA/MS students interested in consulting & investment banking (IB) in career planning, personal branding, job search, school-to-work transition, and career transition and management. Administer and interpret career assessments for students/alumni. Document coaching sessions including notes, outcomes and follow-up assignments.
External Relations/Employer Outreach: Perform outreach functions with groups such as students, faculty, staff, alumni and employer recruiters to effectively engage in career-related activities. Participate in industry/function-specific events (conferences, workshops, etc.) for professional development & department visibility. Serve as staff leader for BBA/MS students in Cox Consulting Academy.
Group/Workshop Career Coaching & Training: Design, develop, and execute specific career development seminars/workshops including classroom presentations. Plan and manage career-related presentations upon request. Manage all peer coaches including recruitment/training and daily duties. Lead group coaching sessions for Collegiate Consulting Academy in specific career management phases or skills.
Event Planning: Plan and execute industry/function-specific events to connect employers/alumni with students. Collaborate with other department staff to ensure event goals/objectives and logistical requirements are delivered and met. Assess effectiveness of each program or event in a timely manner. Track attendance and outcomes for each event and responsibly for reporting.
Teaching: Instruct students enrolled in career courses. Plan curriculum, prepare & deliver meaningful & current content. Assess and evaluate student learning outcomes/performance and issue grades for students in course. Engage employers/alumni in career course to gain current & relevant job function needs.
Reporting: Prepare required reports (such as placement), program and student learning outcomes and assessment plans, and other required data/information including website content as directed and in a timely manner.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree and/or business degree (BBA, MBA) preferred.
A minimum of three years professional experience required.
Previous experience within a career center is preferred. Experience in consulting or finance either in a functional role or in recruiting is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, coaching and verbal communication skills with the ability to manage and build relationships with a wide range of constituencies and students with diverse cultural backgrounds. A customer service orientation is essential.
Must also demonstrate a strong business acumen to discuss business terminology from accounting perspective with the ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Must be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team is essential.
Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks with a strong focus on attention to detail.
Must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook); working knowledge of social media tools is preferred.
This position requires some evening work for career-related events and occasional travel to conferences and workshops.
Sit for long periods of time.
