The University of Mary Washington is searching for an inaugural director of the Center for Career and Professional Development. Reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Engagement and Student Success, the Executive Director will be a transformational leader who provides vision and leadership for the University’s goal of making the process of finding and securing a meaningful and rewarding career a central component of the student experience.
The Executive Director is responsible for the oversight and management of the University’s career center which serves students across the university and in each of its three colleges. A central aspect of this inaugural role will be to increase the visibility and reputation of the University among prospective employers as well as collaborating with university officials across several divisions (e.g. Alumni Relations, Advancement, Continuing and Professional Studies, and college deans) to advance the university’s strategic vision through meaningful initiatives, partnerships, and programs.
Required Education, Experience and Qualifications
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Business or related field;
Seven years of progressive leadership experience in higher education or an equivalent combination of education and experience in corporate management and recruitment;
Prior supervisory experience developing and supervising a professional staff;
Prior experience building external relationships to create opportunities for students and alumni;
Knowledge of best practices in college career planning and counseling;
Demonstrated commitment to the liberal arts and an ability to connect the student experience to the world of work;
Prior experience in strategic planning, outcomes assessment, and program evaluation;
Knowledge of industry and workforce needs, employment trends, and the economic, legal, regulatory, and technological issues that will impact the lives of today’s students;
Demonstrated ability to develop and supervise professional staff;
Outstanding interpersonal, presentation, and writing skills.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Qualifications
Ph.D. or another terminal degree;
Career Center management experience;
Experience working with faculty and academic departments;
Prior corporate work experience to include management, marketing, and recruiting;
Prior fundraising and donor development experience;
Knowledge of and experience with the use of digital networks and social media in support of career and professional development services;
Experience using data and statistical analysis to inform decision making and program development.
