The HORIZONS (TRIO) Student Support Services program Career Counselor supports first – generation and low-income students’ academic success by providing career and personal counseling to students who are in need of it. This role instructs all sections of the Career Development Lab associated with GS 199: Strategies for a Successful First Year. Further, the Career Counselor provides additional opportunities for student growth and development by overseeing the HORIZONS Peer Mentoring Program and the Service-Learning Program.
Master’s Degree in counseling, psychology, career development, education, or related field
Two years professional experience working with students in student services, advising, counseling, career development, or teaching
Knowledge of career assessment instruments, career counseling techniques, career development, and counseling
Competency to analyze, interpret, apply, and follow policies and procedures.
Capacity to represent the University and program with tact and diplomacy at all times.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build working relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels.
Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
Motivated individual with ability to manage competing priorities, work under pressure, handle frequent interruptions and meet deadlines.
Ability to identify and determine problems, analyze information and implement solutions.
Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment.
Must be student-focused
This position is grant funded, and will be up for renewal in August, 2020. HORIZONS fully expects to receive renewal of funds and has been supported by the Department of Education for over 40 years.
