The University of Virginia’s Career Center is seeking an Associate Director, UVA Internship Placement Program. The UVA Career Center engages and supports students in the discovery and pursuit of meaningful lives. We do this by encouraging exploration, offering customized coaching and advising, fostering tailored connections, creating innovative programming, curating relevant content and technologies, developing essential skills, and facilitating transformative experiences.
The Career Center places a high priority on quality individual direct service and exceptional customer service for all key constituents. The Associate Director is a member of both the UVA Internship Placement Team and the Employer Relations Team which has the responsibility for successful employer relations to include: acting as an ambassador to the employment community, maintaining ongoing contact with recruiters who have established relationships, developing new relationships with recruiters, and keeping abreast of developments in local, national, and international career trends as they pertain to the career interests of students and alumni.
Reporting to the Director of Employer Relations and Experiential Learning (herein Director), the Associate Director has primary responsibility for planning and executing all strategic and programmatic aspects of the UVA Internship Placement Program (herein IPP) with supervisory responsibilities for a program coordinator, graduate assistant, and other student staff. The Associate Director will serve as the primary contact for providing information regarding the IPP, the successful recruitment and placement of UVA students in the program, support for IPP academic courses, and all global internship programming.
Strategic Program Management and Operations 40%
Provides strategic programming, recruitment, employer relations, and assessment oversight IPP, ISO international internship programs, and other internship pilots to meet goals set by the Director.
Establishes structure, programming, timeline, and detailed operating plan for on and off Grounds activity that integrates synergies with the Employer Relations team, Career Center events, and supports collaboration with Career Community builders.
Collaborates with marketing team to generate effective marketing messages, outreach, and features to engage 2nd and 3rd year students.
Directs all aspects of the student recruitment process for IPP and ISO international internship programs - applications, interviews, selections, placements - including creation of recruitment materials; planning and facilitating information sessions; managing application submissions and deadlines; distributing application materials to interviewers; scheduling interviews; and advising and supporting student applicants moving through the process.
Recruits and trains IPP interviewers, including development of application/interview scoring rubrics.
Directs, plans, and administers internship supervisor and intern orientations to equip program participants with key competencies and skills, and sets program guidelines expectations.
Manages program budget and resources in collaboration with the Career Center budget team.
Develops and implements legal policies to support program risk management and manages all general internship agreement form requests.
Institutes regular program assessments to monitor quality and learning outcomes.
Contributes to technology assessment and new database development to support program operations.
Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates IPP team including a program coordinator, graduate assistant, and other student staff.
Oversees curriculum development for all IPP associated courses including oversight of the faculty team to ensure curriculum is in-line with program goals and is integrated with the internship experience.
Serves as a faculty member for IPP courses and engages guest lecturers and employers to support curriculum delivery.
Employer Relations & Account Management 30%
Recruits new internship partners to build experiential opportunities that meet students’ interest/demand and the need of Career Community builders to meet goals set by the Director.
Contributes specifically to an internship development strategy that supports UVA’s entrepreneurial community through partnership with ILab and other organizations.
Develops analysis to identify regional and national program internship prospects.
Develops marketing and outreach material as a part of the ER toolbox for employers.
Plans, directs, and administers internship supervisor training.
Develops MOUs for internship partnerships.
Participates in regular ER meetings to ensure the IPP employer development strategy is integrated into the broader Career Center employer development strategy.
Student Services 20%
Provides student advising and services to support IPP and global internship programs.
Develops plan to effectively conduct outreach and advising in various Career Center spaces.
Creates and implements high quality service model to support all recruitment and internship agreement needs using new technologies and broader team resources to meet periods of high demand.
Supports Career Center general advising and programming as needed.
Program Assessment & Internship Tracking Data 10%
Conducts program assessment, manages recruiting data and statistics, creates improvement plan, and generates an annual report in concert with ER team reporting.
Leads general internship data tracking through pre-summer and post-summer survey and integrates analysis into ER reporting.
Facilitates the distribution and management of the annual summer plans survey.

The anticipated hiring salary range for this position is $62,000-$70,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will pass a background check. Master’s degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education or related field or Master of Business Administration
At least 5 years of experience in a student or employee development environment or at least 5 years of business experience
Proven ability to provide career counseling/coaching in a student or employee development environment
Outstanding ability to conceptualize, design and implement innovative career development programs appropriate for all levels of undergraduate students seeking careers in all sectors of employment
Extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art occupational, career and job information resources, technology and materials
Demonstrated leadership, organizational, research and analysis, and strategic planning experience
Demonstrated skills in teaching and mentoring that promotes the professional development of career counselors, graduate interns, student leaders, student volunteers or employees
Strong verbal and written communications skills; excellent presentation skills
Ability to develop and manage budgets, and direct multiple projects
Demonstrated program development and event coordination experience
Proficient computer skills, especially MS Office Suite and Web-based technologies.
Prior experience with career services management software/technology (ex. NACELink/Symplicity, Experience, etc.)
Familiarity with career assessment instruments such as the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory
