The Marshall Undergraduate Career Services Office provides co-curricular programming for students in the areas of career advisement and professional and leadership development. The office serves an undergraduate population of approximately 4,000 business majors and 1000 business minors and provides a range of programs and services such as advisement, career exploration, and interview and recruitment preparation with a focus on domestic and international internships and full time job opportunities across a variety of functions and industries.
The Associate Director, Career Services will oversee Career Advisement and Education services and programming. The incumbent will manage career advising hours, management and delivery of career education workshops and resources and work to grow the experiential learning component of career education.
This position will also act as a resource for employers wanting to expand their presence within the Marshall School of Business. The incumbent will promote career exploration and recruitment preparation activities for Marshall students, covering domestic and international internship and full-time job opportunities, across a variety of functions and industries. Ability to manage relationships with multiple constituencies (employers, students, alumni, faculty, staff, and administration) is a must. The incumbent will assist with additional programming as needed, and reports to the Undergraduate Career Services Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties
This position will be part of an office that has had a transformational effect on the undergraduate population. Key job accountabilities include:
Oversee career advising activities including scheduling and tracking of advisement hours of the team, training and coaching advisors and peer career advisors and preparing monthly, quarterly and annual reports on student advising.
Manage development and delivery of career education programs from foundational workshops on resume writing, business communications, networking and interviewing as well as career exploration and industry/function insight sessions.
Build and implement assessment tools to monitor effectiveness of both advising and education workshops and look for opportunities to increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes.
Develop strategy for improving experiential learning opportunities for students in the region, nationwide and abroad. This will involve developing internship, job shadowing programs across industries and functions.
Advise students as needed regarding career issues and strategies, internship search methods, resume preparation and related matters in both 1:1 and group workshop settings. Determine career advising needs of individual students as well as groups of students and develop action plans accordingly.
Manage and coach one to two Career Advisors.
Oversee the department’s distribution and compilation of the First Destination Survey and data each year.
Manage the online resource library to ensure its relevance and effectiveness. Work to promote its usage and track utilization.
Be a champion for the international student population, providing specialized advisement, education and resources as needed.
Serve as the point of contact for various Marshall programs such as GLP, LINC, and TIE, and BCA, providing specialized career services where needed.
Additional duties for this position
Cultivate relationships with corporate recruiters to develop internship and full time job opportunities. Manage and expand relationships with existing corporate recruiters and other company representatives. Generate new leads/relationships at companies in targeted industries and functions for on and off-campus recruiting.
Engage with Marshall student organizations regarding career programming and employer contacts that would benefit members.
Liaise with the USC Career Center and other campus career centers, such as the Marshall MBA Career Resource Center, Annenberg School for Communication and Viterbi School of Engineering.
Assist other staff members in the Career Services and Academic Advising with programming and events.
Master’s degree preferred with prior work experience in higher education or relevant industry experience.
Experience with database, CRM systems, and data collection/analytics a plus.
Experience in large-scale event planning and execution and prior supervisory experience preferred.
Possess strong organizational, written and oral communication, and relationship building skills.
Be naturally inquisitive and persistent with the ability to draw on various sources of data to investigate issues and identify solutions.
Have high tolerance for ambiguous situations and demonstrated use of strong professional judgement.
Have ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing priorities and fluctuating workloads.
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree
Minimum Experience: 1 year
Minimum Field of Expertise: Related education and experience in counseling and career services and advisement.
