Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Student Affairs at the Gillings School of Global Public Health provides an array of services and resources to prospective, admitted and current students. We aim to enhance student development by providing a supportive and safe environment in which you can achieve academic, social and professional success.
We coordinate major schoolwide programs such as orientations, a student activities fair, a career and internship fair and professional development workshops. We work to recruit excellent students; coordinate diversity outreach programs to expose high school, undergraduate students and professionals to the field of public health; and offer career services for current students and recent alumni.
Position Summary
The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) in the Gillings School of Global Public Health is seeking a full-time alumni career services specialist position who will work in the Gillings Career Services office. This position is responsible for assisting alumni with career planning preparation tasks such as interviewing, how to create a resume, building interview skills, and job search strategies through face to face visits, webinars, and online programs.
The alumni career services specialist also supports marketing and communication efforts to engage current and prospective new students and works to identify and implement online tools, subscriptions, networking services, or opportunities for graduates of Gillings School. This position collaborates with career development staff across the campus on events, alumni engagement strategies, and employer relations to strive toward university best practices.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* At least one year of experience in career development, human resources, or an equivalent setting providing career placement activities, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
* Thorough knowledge of all aspects of the job search process including, resume-writing, business correspondence, career assessment tools, interviewing (i.e. behavioral interviews), and the demands of high-level employers.
* Understanding and appreciation of career coaching model. Familiarity with and use of action-oriented coaching models such as positive psychology and appreciative inquiry
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Master’s degree in counseling, public health/or related field. For candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities with the deliver and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and relevant experience in substitution.
* Demonstrate creativity, innovation, and an entrepreneurial style.
* Ability to conduct individual and small group coaching sessions.
* Ability to develop and present creative and cutting-edge programming related to all aspects of the college-to-career process.
* Knowledge of social media, computer-based career assessment and recruiting tools and job search programs.
* Excellent interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.
* Knowledge of current public health employment trends and student interest areas .
* Ability to interact with faculty, students, alumni and other staff members to accomplish goals.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
