The Division of Student Affairs at James Madison University (JMU) welcomes applications for a unique to JMU staff cohort hire. This hire will consist of four student-facing positions. Positions hired in this cohort will be housed within the Office of Residence Life/Conference Services, the University Career Center, and Office of Orientation and Transition, and Student Life. You will have the opportunity to apply for a single position within the cohort or apply for multiple roles.

The Division of Student Affairs includes University Career Center, Center for Multicultural Student Services, Community Service-Learning, Counseling Center, Dean of Students, Disability Services, Student Accountability & Restorative Practices, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity & Expression, Orientation and Transition, Residence Life, Student Life, University Health Center, University Recreation and University Unions. The division is an integral part of the campus community and works collaboratively with the other divisions of the university in supporting the mission, vision, and values of the university. The University Career Center serves all JMU students and recent alumni. Our staff consists of 19 professional staff members, 4 graduate assistants, and 12 student assistants, organized into 3 units: career advising, employer services, and outreach and engagement. Our career advisors work with JMU’s academic colleges and the Graduate School. This team structure is designed to create opportunities for students and empower them in their career pursuits.
Each position will be selected through an innovative practice called cohort hire. The search committee hiring for this position will be selecting candidates for four other positions. Career Advising
Provide comprehensive career advising to students and recent alumni, individually and in groups. Administer and interpret career assessments with students as needed. Empower students to explore careers and develop effective search strategies for their career goals. Coach students to effectively articulate the value of their JMU education. Provide career resources regarding the job/internship search and graduate school search. Be able to discuss with students and recent alumni how their social identities impact or are impacted by their job search, graduate school search, or post-graduate careers. Seek continued learning about one’s social identities and how potential biases may show up when working with students and in programming.
Programming & Course Instruction
Present on a variety of topics to help students with career readiness goals, including resume writing, cover letters, interviewing, job/internship search, graduate school preparation, evaluating jobs offers, etc. Presentations may take place in workshops, classrooms, online, and other settings. Tailor career-related programs, services, and resources for designated liaison areas. Teach a career decision-making/career exploration course once a year, complying with all JMU protocol and deadlines for instructional faculty.
Outreach to Students, Faculty, Staff
Cultivate and maintain collaborative partnerships with stakeholders including administrators and faculty. Identify and respond to trends related to student needs and employer engagement trends through services, resources, and programs for assigned academic areas. Serve as an information resource on career-related topics related to liaison area for students, faculty, employers, and University Career Center colleagues. Create opportunities to interact with students in the space of the assigned academic liaison area as deemed beneficial.
Employer Engagement
Initiate and plan at least one employer/student engagement event each semester for your assigned academic areas (such as a networking event, career panel, career trek or experiential learning opportunities). These events should be designed to create opportunities for students to connect with employers and alumni. Collaborate with Employer Services to assist with employer development and employer relations. Support departmental career fairs.
Collaboration
Actively participate in departmental meetings, contributing to discussions and decision-making in a professional manner. Demonstrate support for office events and programs by being flexible with time available to occasionally include weekend and evening hours and regularly contribute assistance. Show collegial courtesy by responding to requests in a timely manner. Share information and communicate regularly with supervisor and larger University Career Center team. Develop relationships with faculty, staff, employers, and alumni with the common goal of increasing access to career-related networks for all students, regardless of background or social capital.
Professional Development
Stay current on higher education, career-related and industry trends, and student development theory through research, conferences, articles, webinars and collaboration with peers in the field. Demonstrate the ability to work with diverse populations by seeking additional training in topics such as identity, social justice, equity, communication, emotional intelligence, etc.
Successful candidates will possess the ability to meet the functional needs of the home department and engage in work holistically to help JMU become an institution where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
