Assistant Director of the Center for Career Development
The Center for Career Development at Wesleyan College drives student success through the four-year From Here to Career program. Reporting to the Executive Director of Career Development, the Assistant Director of Career Development will build strategic employer partnerships, guide students in job searches and professional skills, and manage career programming and outreach. Key responsibilities include fostering internship and job opportunities, conducting one-on-one student advising, organizing events like Career Fairs, coordinating student employment logistics, and maintaining the Wolves-at-Work closet. Additionally, the role oversees bi-weekly newsletters, social media, and Handshake engagement to enhance student career readiness and connections.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Employer Relationship Development (40%)
Formulate and execute strategies to engage employers in supporting students' career development, including creating internship, experiential learning, and full-time job opportunities.
Collaborate with campus leadership, including the CEO and the Center for Career Development (CCD), to align outreach efforts.
Develop a consistent communication plan for engaging employers, utilizing platforms like Handshake and Razor’s Edge.
Track and analyze engagement outcomes to optimize outreach effectiveness.
Attend local networking events and conduct employer site visits to strengthen partnerships and enhance community presence.
Gather insights on employment trends and skill demands through resources like NACE and GACE, and through direct employer interactions across various industries.
Coordinate events such as informational sessions, etiquette dinners, and both virtual and in-person meetings to connect employers and alumnae with the campus community.
Encourage active participation of employers and alumnae in campus activities to enrich student networking opportunities.
Oversee the review and approval of job postings to ensure quality and relevance on Handshake.
Promote Handshake as a key engagement tool, coordinating employer partnerships and outreach efforts.
Plan and manage events that bring employers to campus, including organizing Wesleyan’s Career & Graduate Fair.
Facilitate student participation in additional career fairs such as the Women’s Colleges & Universities Career Fair.
Student Advising (25%)
Conduct one-on-one advising sessions to guide students through career development processes, including internship and job searches, salary negotiation, professional ethics, informational interviews, and interview preparation.
Stay informed on workforce trends to provide relevant and effective career development resources to students.
CCD Programming (15%)
Manage the Wolves-at-Work clothes closet and coordinate related events to support student professional attire needs.
Assist in planning and coordinating CCD events such as Career Fairs, Discovery Days, Professional Development Days, PDE Showcase, First Destination Day, and various speakers, panels, and workshops.
Provide logistical support, including transportation, for students attending local and state-wide career fairs and opportunities.
Assist in coordinating logistics for on-campus student employment opportunities.
CCD Outreach and Communications (10%)
Create and distribute bi-weekly newsletters announcing internships, careers, and professional development opportunities to students.
Support the utilization and expansion of Handshake, including troubleshooting user issues.
Represent Wesleyan students in professional development associations (e.g., GACE) to maintain eligibility for annual career fairs.
Coordinate special projects and participate in committees as needed.
Professional Development Experiences (10%)
Manage the workflow approval process for internships and professional development experiences, ensuring efficiency and compliance.
Promote internship and Professional Development Experience (PDE) programs to students and faculty through meetings, informational materials, and workshops.
Coordinate all correspondence, registration, and evaluations related to internships and PDEs.
Required Skills
Ability to develop strong relationships with a wide variety of internal and external constituents, including employers, alumnae, students, faculty, staff, and senior leadership.
Ability to drive engagement through meetings, networking, written communication, and programming.
Outstanding communication and marketing skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to a wide variety of audiences.
Strong project management skills, including ability to strategically identify priorities, manage multiple projects, and create innovative programming.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to set, achieve, and assess goals and outcomes.
Ability to deliver group presentations as well as coach students individually.
Ability to drive organizational vehicles for work related projects.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required.
Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Business Administration, or related field desirable.
Two years of experience in career services, higher education, human resources, recruiting, or community development strongly preferred.
The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated skills in strategic planning, relationship development, project management, advising/coaching, marketing, event planning, and the ability to work with diverse populations.
